Don’t Sleep on This Viral Makeup Tool

Luscious lashes are the goal for most people. While mascara is a tried-and-true staple, it doesn’t always deliver a natural look. Given the pared-down approach to makeup, naturally long and full lashes have become the new standard. Achieving the look is easier than you might think, especially with the help of an eyelash curler. Now, clamping your lashes into a device with one eye closed may sound like a disaster waiting to happen. However, seeing millions of people on TikTok using the Surratt Relevee Lash Curler ($36) may change your mind.

The viral device has been featured in tons of videos (over 157 million, to be exact), and has been a long-time favorite of makeup darling Kim Kardashian. In 2018, the reality star and mogul shared her glam routine with Vogue and raved about the Surratt eyelash curler as the secret to her lashes. That was five years ago, and since then, the humble device has become a fan favorite and household name for makeup artists and creators. However, eyelash curlers are still foreign to many people. Ahead, we tapped two makeup artists for tips on using the viral eyelash curler to get your best lashes yet.

What is the Surratt eyelash curler?

If you’re a fellow TikTok makeup lover, you’ve probably seen the device come across your FYP accompanied by the #surrattbeauty. However, outside the app, the Surratt eyelash curler is called the Relevee Lash Curler. It’s ergonomically designed to fit comfortably in your hand and has a sleek matte black finish.

Aside from the high-tech shape, it also has silicone pads and one replacement pad, which is ideal, according to Samreen Arshad, makeup artist and founder and CEO of Samreen’s Vanity. “Lash curlers with flexible silicone pads are great as they are gentler on the eyes,” she says. She explains that replacing the pads on the curler is also important to keep the device working properly.

What are the benefits of using an eyelash curler?

“The biggest benefit to using an eyelash curler is that it opens your eyes and gives you a brighter, more awake look,” says NYC-based makeup artist Stephanie Molina. The pro notes that while most people have naturally beautiful lashes, they can oftentimes be too straight. “Adding a curl enhances not just your lashes but the overall shape of your eyes,” she adds.

Arshad notes that a good device can also lift the lashes and even add definition. “Lash curlers help separate your lashes, making mascara application easier and giving you a more natural appearance.”

Eyelash curler dos and dont’s

If you’re new to using an eyelash curler, there are plenty of tutorials featuring Surratt’s Relevee Lash Curler, including one from Jennifer Garner. Though the method is fairly simple, these expert tips can help.

A handheld mirror can give you a closer viewpoint. If you’re opting for this method, Molina recommends aligning the mirror with your nose and looking down while curling the lashes. “Be sure to place the curler at the base of your lash line,” she says.

“Be aware of how much pressure you’re using. Lots of pressure doesn’t necessarily equal more curl and can result in breakage,” says Arshad. For a tighter curl, she suggests moving the curler down your lashline, toward the middle of the lashes, and then adding a second curl.

“Lash curlers can also work with lash extensions to give you a more blended and natural look. Just before the faux lashes have been properly applied before curling,” says Molina.
