The Benefits of Dry Brushing

@hanna.schoenberg

There are certain beauty rituals that earn a permanent place in your routine because they’re simple, satisfying, and make you feel instantly more polished. Dry brushing is one of them.

The technique is exactly what it sounds like: using a firm, dry body brush on dry skin before showering. It takes only a few minutes, requires virtually no cleanup, and leaves skin feeling noticeably smoother and refreshed.

Think of it as a pre-shower reset for your body.

WHAT IS DRY BRUSHING?

Dry brushing is a form of physical exfoliation that uses a body brush—typically made with natural or firm bristles—to gently sweep across the skin.

Unlike a body scrub, there’s no water, oil, or product involved. The brush itself helps loosen and remove dead skin cells sitting on the surface of the skin.

The result? Skin that feels softer, smoother, and more polished.

WHY WE LOVE IT

SMOOTHER, SOFTER SKIN

The most immediate benefit of dry brushing is exfoliation. Regular brushing helps remove dead surface skin that can leave the body feeling dry, rough, or dull.

It can be especially satisfying on areas prone to texture, including the legs, arms, elbows, knees, and thighs.

A FRESHER-LOOKING GLOW

The brushing motion temporarily increases circulation at the skin’s surface, which is why your skin may look slightly pink or more radiant immediately afterward.

Pair it with a shower followed by a rich body lotion or oil and your skin can look especially luminous.

BETTER BODY-CARE PREP

Exfoliated skin creates a smoother canvas for the rest of your body-care routine.

After dry brushing and showering, apply your favorite body moisturizer, serum, butter, or oil while the skin is still slightly damp to help lock in hydration.

THE FULL-BODY RESET

There’s also something undeniably satisfying about the ritual itself.

Those few quiet minutes before your shower can make an otherwise ordinary routine feel intentional—a small act of maintenance that feels equal parts beauty treatment and self-care.

HOW TO DRY BRUSH

Always start with completely dry skin before showering.

Begin at your feet and work upward using gentle, sweeping motions. On the legs and arms, brush toward the center of the body. Around the stomach and joints, you can use soft circular motions.

Keep the pressure light to moderate. Dry brushing should feel stimulating—not painful or abrasive.

Spend a little extra time on areas where you tend to experience roughness or dryness, but avoid repeatedly brushing the same area until it becomes irritated.

Once you’re finished, shower as usual and follow with a hydrating body product.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU DRY BRUSH?

More isn’t necessarily better.

Start with one or two times per week and see how your skin responds. If your skin tolerates it well, you can gradually incorporate it more frequently.

If your skin feels raw, overly red, itchy, or sensitive afterward, ease up on the pressure or give your skin a few days between sessions.

WHAT ABOUT CELLULITE AND “DETOXING”?

Dry brushing is often associated with claims about eliminating cellulite, removing toxins, or dramatically changing the structure of the skin.

We prefer to keep expectations realistic.

Because brushing exfoliates the skin and temporarily increases surface circulation, it can make skin look smoother and more refreshed for a period of time. That may also temporarily improve the appearance of certain areas.

But think of dry brushing as a body-care ritual—not a miracle treatment.

A FEW THINGS TO SKIP

Avoid dry brushing over cuts, sunburn, rashes, active irritation, inflamed skin, or areas that are already sensitized.

And while a little temporary pinkness can be normal, aggressive brushing isn’t the goal. When it comes to exfoliation, gentler and consistent usually beats harder and occasional.

THE WYLDE GREY TAKE

Dry brushing isn’t complicated—and that’s precisely the appeal.

A few minutes before your shower. A good body brush. Long, gentle strokes. Then warm water and something deeply hydrating afterward.

It’s one of those low-effort rituals that makes an everyday shower feel a little more luxurious.

And we’re very into that.
